Market Hall, Fulham

Food

The street food scene in London is thriving. Brands like Kerb and Street Feast have brought together some of the capital’s most interesting and talented chefs to squares, festivals and even abandoned warehouses. Market Hall have now joined the party, giving traders a more permanent base inside disused properties with personality.

Market Hall Fulham

Home for Fulham’s foodies

Fulham Broadway’s old ticket hall was built in 1880 but had been empty for the past 6 years. Its vaulted ceiling, gorgeous wood ticket office and stone pillars were hidden from commuters while they were instead ushered through a more modern tube entrance in a nearby shopping centre.

Hotbox, Yard Sale and Soft Serve Society at Market Hall Fulham

Earlier this year, Market Hall re-opened this beautiful site, and filled it with some incredible street food from the likes of Yard Sale (since replaced by Made of Dough), Super Tacos, Hotbox, Soft Serve Society and more.

Butchies fried chicken

Butchies, another of their traders, produce the most incredible buttermilk fried chicken (pictured above). The chicken is so succulent and delicious with a fry that is light but still has that hugely satisfying crunch when you bite into it. This video from Market Hall is great to hear more about what makes Butchies so special.

I’d been a fan since my first bite years ago when they were trading from a mobile stall at British Summer Time festival so it’s great that they’ve now got a permanent home for us West Londoners.

Once your food is ordered you’re armed with a buzzer so you can grab a drink while you wait. The team inside the well stocked ticket office-cum-bar make a tasty cocktail and their colleagues around the room keep everything spotless, collecting up empty plates in no time.

I was sad to see their fellow tenants, Yard Sale move on as their gluten free neapolitan-style pizza was some of the best I’d ever had. The rotation keeps things fresh though and means even if you’re coming back regularly you’re unlikely to ever work your way through it all.

Next stop: Victoria

There’s already another Market Hall space in development at Victoria (opening late 2018), using the former Pacha nightclub, and a third off Oxford Circus in the old BHS building (opening early 2019) which will be the largest food hall in the UK! Victoria already has the likes of Nonna Tonda and Monty’s Deli lined up so you can tell it’s going to be incredible.

Not content with adding 2 new locations, they’re still working to build on the success in Fulham too with a second floor on the way. It’ll feature an event space, fitness studio and roof terrace – I can’t wait to go back to check it out.

It’ll be interesting to see the effect that ‘polished’ street food experiences offered by Market Hall will have on the wider scene. Something that has tended to be synonymous with loud music, vibrant colours and disused oil drums could be heading for a more mainstream, family-friendly future.
